Interdisciplinary lecture series on animal rights (ILAR)
26/04/2006 - 19/10/2006
Videos and further information are available at www.vorlesungen-tierrecht.de

"This project is the serious attempt of approaching a topic which is difficult from a moral perspective and from the perspective of science policy. It endeavours to make it accessible to the wider public and to make it possible to follow the worldwide debate on this area. It is a field of current interest, with a high social relevance, and it has a direct impact on the future scientific work of many students. Is is [...] one of those rare occasions where the interdisciplinary cooperation which is frequently demanded by thir-party funding bodies arises quite naturally [...]."
(Prof. Dr. Peter McLaughlin, Philosophisches Seminar, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg)

With a total of 15 events, our Interdisciplinary Lectures on Animal Rights (ilar), which ran from the 26th of April till the 19th of October 2006, extended for more than a semester and comprised a range of disciplines from the philosophy via theology, ethnology, law, veterinary medicine, human medicine, politics to biology and animal protection. It therefore covered all the relevant fields of the area.

The speakers were renowned scientists from all over the world and also politicians and animal rights activists -- including Prof. Dr. Tom Regan, the intellectual leader of the animal rights movement and the famous social critic Dr. Eugen Drewermann.

We aimed at being accessible for those attending whilst maintaining high academic standards, and we wanted to provide an insightful overview of the field of animal rights and to lay out current problems and attempts at solving them. We hoped to stimulate interdisciplinary cooperation among the students and scientists of the University of Heidelberg and to enhance more generally an awareness of animal rights issues.
