History of the IAT -- current work

In June 2005, Rainer Ebert founded the IAT. By putting up notices in the philosophical faculty and
similar institutions, he publicised his idea of having a forum where to discuss animal ethics within the University of Heidelberg. As a consequence, our study group was officially founded on the 23rd of June 2005. It consists of students of different subjects as well as of professionals which have a profound interest in animal ethics.

Our main aim is to establish animal ethics and animal rights as a scientific discipline within the university and to help contribute giving these topics the importance within society which is appropriate for such a field. Therefore, we focus on organising lectures and talks which are open to everybody interested in the field. In our interdisciplinary series of talks during the summer term of 2006, we invited academics from a variety of disciplines such as philosophy or natural sciences to Heidelberg. In doing so, the audience got a grasp of current animal ethics in all its breadth. Following on from that, we organised talks on different topics within the field in regular intervals, and we are hoping to focus on doing this in the future.

In addition to organising this lecture series, and in order to further interest in this topic, we have started working on a collection of essays and papers which contains the contributions by the speakers and which should therefore expose the reader to the breadth of the field. As editors of this book, which is entitled "Tierrechte - Eine interdisziplinäre Herausforderung", our work focuses on translating and proofreading the texts and on liaising both with the authors and the publisher.
Another important aspect of our work is maintaining our blog, which is where we publish articles,
essays and interviews on animal ethics and where we discuss these issues. Both members of the IAT
as well as non-members can contribute to it.
